I had the opportunity to just go ride (a.k.a. no agenda or time limit due to other things needing my attention). I had the route I wanted to ride in mind but wasn’t quite certain if that was going to be the full ride for the day. I revisited this 3-5 mile dirt path following railed roads that link up with a road that would take me further out into the country. I went out and knew of an inlet that would take me to Wheeler Wildlife Refuge routes I had ridden previously.
I start heading to Wheeler. As I’m approaching the well known routes, I see this side gate open in the opposite direction. I take it. It leads me in and out of the woods into farm land and wild life refuge areas that are absolutely stunning. I took several different turns carelessly riding until I couldn’t make out a path ahead.
All in all the ride was only about 45 miles and for the first time in a very long time, I truly felt lost. My phone only had 20’ish percent battery left or else there would be a lot more pictures taken. Normally that wouldn’t stop me but I forgot to pack an extra tube; a previous ride took it out and the thought hit me that If I’m 10-15 miles away from civilization… it would be a good thing to be able to call for a pick up or tube drop off.
This particular railed road is marked as a “Private Railroad”. Not sure what that means but it makes me think of sneaky smuggling for some reason.
The first opening into the new dirt/gravel road.
Wooded path entrance
It was a big contrast from the open clouded sunshine. Dark with the sound of my tires crushing rock and dirt; woodland creatures scurrying in the trees and forest floor.
Back into open land.
There was one point where a damn crossed a section of the refuge into the Tennessee River. It would be a great place to ride to, beer in tote, and watch the sun set.
This was a super rad ride that I’ll revisit several times. Feel free to get in touch if you’re in the local area to ride along. Cheers!
