I received a very rad email from Crist Espiritu (co-founder of DOZE) yesterday filled with his personal perspective on creativity, what inspires him, and the endless possibilities of art.

Crist EspirituuuWHAT INSPIRES CRIST ESPIRITU?

I find inspiration in everything I encounter. From the mundane to the extra ordinary, I absorb all information and stimulus then process them into visual output. It can be something as ordinary as a sandwich, a logo on some weird Japanese chocolate bar, a piece of dog turd in the gutter or something more complex like quantum mechanics, everything that grabs my attention turns (almost inevitably) into inspiration. The visuals in my art come off as chaotic and twisted most of the time I guess because that is how I see existence. As bleak as that may sound I don’t really look at the human condition as totally hopeless, if anything I see the inert chaos as something very exciting and a signifier for endless possibilities.

Creativity in itself gets me really inspired as well. Seeing other artists progress in their works fuels my own drive to create. And I do try to help promote a culture of creative thinking through DOZE Collective, an online platform that me and my friend started where we feature artists who are pushing forward with their visions. It might be too profound (or even cheesy) but I (and everybody at DOZE) truly believe that “creativity will save the world from a boring and heartless future”.

The street is another source of inspiration for me. Its raw randomness offers a lot of possibilities for expressing one’s self. Putting my art in public spaces allows a certain level of surprise in the (unsuspecting) audience’s process of appreciation. The interaction between artwork and audience in the street is so instantaneous that it doesn’t leave any room for pretention… that, for me, is a really beautiful thought.

Although he sent over a dozen or so images of his art, these are the 2 pieces I dig the most.

Big thanks to Crist for reaching out to us! Very inspiring.

Why should you also check out DOZE…?  Because they believe in and promote creativity.

The DOZE Collective exists not for profit but for propagating inspiration.”
