Matix Clothing :: “Who Is Daewon Song?”

Who Is Daewon Song? from Matix Clothing on Vimeo.

One of the radest skaters of all time.  I love the style/added creative perspective he brings to skateboarding!

I didn’t pick up on Matix till about 2003.  Marc Johnson was obviously a crowd pleaser with his high tech style mixed in with humor.  His part in “Fully Flared” is by far one of my favorite.  Daewon’s part in the new Almost vid “5 Incher” could easily be described as… skateboard freestyle? HA!  His ability seems to be endless and I dig that.  To be honest, the entire Matix crew complements each other in that way… an endless pursuit to keep on riding and creating something the world has never seen.

“It’s just funny how all these things we talked about on the kitchen floor having pizza actually went into motion.”

EXACTLY!  Dreamers, creators, the imaginative… we are skateboarders, cyclist, artists, you, me, anybody!  Don’t let the doubt daemons creep into your brain bucket and steal your creativity/passion/motivation before it has even begun!

Matix says it best:

“Everyday is an adventure and every weekend is a trip. Let your creative sense take hold and explore new paths. In the end our goal is to create something unique for those who share this common bond.”

RIDE x CREATE

Take Flight

Yup!  Had a blast this weekend.

I had another 4×4 piece of plywood left over from Kyle Steed’s illustration brought to wood, “Don’t Play Safe“, that I wanted to work on this weekend. About two weeks ago the idea hit me to do something incorporating circles.  Didn’t know how or in what fashion I wanted to bring this idea to my wood canvas, so I let the idea marinate in me brain bucket.

As I continue to learn from my mistakes (some would argue there are no mistakes in art), I decided to start this piece on paper to get an idea on where I wanted to go with it.  At first I was just gonna work with circles, then a Passion Pit song came on via Rdio (set to random) from the album “Chunk Of Change” (disclaimer: not a fan of the album, dug the album cover) and I liked the idea of linking the circles together; but not until I had a shape to contrast the circle shenanigans.  Figured a triangle would be rad… THEN it hit me… “Take Flight”.

Take Flight

The triangle showing as a “bucket” to the “balloons”, making it Take Flight.  To further stamp the idea… I added stickers of a few very rad companies that we not only dig, but have been very supportive of the Folly vibe.  Without their love we wouldn’t be nearly as far down the road as we are today.  This was a little way to show our appreciation of that.

Take Flight 1

With all that said. This is the most fun piece I’ve created in a while!  It was blast, no pressure of “accuracy”, I got to reach in my thoughts/ideas and make something I really dig.  It also taught me that not everything has to happen fast.  Normally when an idea hits me I go FULL speed ahead to make that idea reality.  Most of the time it’s good to take your time and let said idea take shape before action is applied.  At the same time, the latter is not necessarily bad either.  I believe it really depends on the piece, creative idea, or new exploratory ride you decide to embark on.

I hope your weekends were full of the Ride x Create vibe!  Mine most definitely was.  The following day, myself and a few good buddies continued to explore the Wheeler Wildlife Refuge, mapping a great 30 mile route that is not only beautiful, but challenging.  Check out more of that via #wheelercross (IG).

Take care. Happy Monday

#whatisonmywood :: Don’t Play Safe

I’ve been wanting to do a #whatisonmywood project incorporating Kyle Steed’s illustrations for a while.  This last weekend just so happen to be the time to do it.

Normally I’ll take an idea or illustration and draw it out from my perspective, then cut, sand, paint; but with this particular project I really wanted to do Kyle’s illustration as much justice as I could and keep it as accurate as possible.

I don’t always work with PC’s, but when I do… it’s normally because I don’t have the right cable to connect my computer.  In order to keep this project as accurate as possible, I borrowed a projector.

Some people might say this makes the illustration brought to wood project easier (which is what I thought at first), but really it creates a level of pressure I’ve yet to feel with my other #whatisonmywood projects.  The pressure comes from doing your best to be as accurate (copy) as possible.  There isn’t room for personal interpretation or outside the box creative insight.

DPS3

Ok, so projecting/tracing complete.  Time to cut. This is the easy yet time consuming part.  When it gets down to the tight corners, I do my best not to lose any phalanges.

DPS4

BOOM, two days later, it be cut up.  Now, this is where I jacked it up.  So in my “don’t play safe” mindset I thought, man… wouldn’t this be rad with a Rasta color way.  What I didn’t have beside me was someone to say HELL NO!  So I proceeded to buy the paint and implement some JAH vibes that ended up looking horrible (not even gonna show that).  It was just wrong for this piece.  I’m sure I’ll revisit a Rasta theme soon.

DPS2

After whiting out the Rasta vibes, I had to do my best to realign the piece to match back up with the projected image, then retrace the best I could and finish in the detail of the black outlining.

DPS

As always, I try to push my limits with something as simple as an iPhone.  Set up a black backdrop at Blevins Bicycle Co. (beer always at the ready) and shot, then edited to show this very similar likeness of the original illustration.

FEWWW!!  That was a lot.

I guess my point in sharing all of this with you is to never stop riding, never stop creating!  Push you limits in something this week/weekend.  It’s ok if you aren’t the best at whatever it is you are trying to accomplish.  Although the “Don’t Play Safe” piece turned out ok… I’m still not 100% happy with it.  “What’s that supposed to mean?”… It means I want to do better, create more, ride more and continue to be consistent x progressive; developing a teachable mentality through patience and practice.  As good ol’ Sean Wes would say “Learn and never quit.”  Hopefully this will be passed to folk around me, and from them to someone else.

CHEERS to the Ride x Create Vibe.  Happy Wednesday Folly folks!  I hope your miles/creations dominated are epic!

Ed Templeton Interview by Anthony Pappalardo

Ed Templeton Interview

I love Ed interviews.  His perspective is always refreshing.

“Hard work is no guarantee of success, but there is no success without hard work. Unpack that sentance.”

“Tenacity and passion will outlast anything.”

“Skateboarding is viewed as a creative breeding ground for artists… Why do you think it’s skaters who have made the biggest impact?

The people who are drawn to it, by nature, [are] prone to be more creative and artistic… That is why many skaters are also painters, photographers and musicians.”
