Finding The Light
Dallas, TX has a lot of fun nooks and crannies to explore. When you get four doodes together that crave exploring and capturing the scene you’ll never not end up with something fun to capture.
Let’s side track for a moment and talk about creativity. It can get EXHAUSTING quick. Not like the “omg I’m rubbing blisters on my heals” exhausting; more like in the “my brain is fried” type of way. There was no pressure to capture a great shot on this day other than that I put on myself. I didn’t have any deliverables, but I did want to create something I’m proud of and more importantly (in this case) something that Kyle was proud. I bring all of this up to say… it’s ok if you get the shot; it’s ok if you don’t. When I overpressure myself I tend to shut down a bit and that’s not where I want to be in my creative process.
This explore x shoot session just so happened to be focused around Kyle as this weekend marked 10 years of marriage with his wife Amanda. The event brought me, Brenton Little, and Nathan Michael in town to share in the celebration. When we all got in we hopped into a car and head downtown where Kyle knew of a fun rooftop access location; with the top floor of the building being renovated, we got to revert back to little children and go exploring.
WE FOUND THE LIGHT!!
Kyle and Michael were on the other side of the floor when Brenton whisper shouts (as if he wanted to keep it to himself for just a moment but got too excited and let his discovery be known) “light leak light leak”, and immediately darted over to this amazing laser beam of light as if he had just found a large group of Easter eggs and wanted to get there first. I follow suit only analyzing the scene and letting Brenton have his moment before Kyle and Michael come over to capture their version of the spot.
Shortly after Brenton and I have our moment Kyle and Nathan find us. Since Kyle was the man of the hour (or day if you will) Nathan directed him into place and away we went to snapping.
Lets stop here for second and talk about photographical direction. Nathan Michael is a pro at this! Figuratively and literally. It was very interesting to watch as he gave micro adjustments to capture his subject and how clearly he got the idea across to the person being shot. I very rarely direct, more so capturing what’s happening and do my best to envision where the shot is going to happen before it actually happens; so for me this was very educational. Cheers to you Nathan! Thank you for that.
SO… on this day our roles played out like this:
Kyle – Model
Nathan – Photographer
Me – Photojournalist
Brenton – Stage Manager
Kyle, Nathan, and myself are all self explanatory rolls. Brenton on the other hand…. he had the scene on lock! With pipe in hand… Brenton starts puffing away to get the spot nice and smoke filled! It was awesome… he knew what the spot was lacking and did his damndest to make it the next level! Shortly after everything is coming together his pipe runs out. But that didn’t stop Brent… he goes and finds a big ass push broom to conjure up some of the dust on the floor. Although we all probably have mesothelioma at this point… we got the shot. Thanks Brenton!!!
Here are a few shots from this day. I hope you enjoy.

The Power of B Squad
“I’m sick of being on B Squad.
Listen, you may be on B Squad, but you’re the B Squad Leader!”
Yup… this weekend was one for the books (or blogs rather). When we three get together fairy dust falls from the sky, the Narnian pathways open there gates, and we live a lifetime of excellence where time stands still, the Angels blow their horns, birds land on our shoulders, and we whistle a happy tune through the rainbow field of butter cups and dandy lions to the land of Excalibur and beyond.
Here is a photo recap starting and finishing in Nashville, TN. I hope you enjoy.
Make sure to go check out Kyle Steed‘s and Brenton Little‘s IG for other rad shots from this bro get away sesh.

FOLLY Review // The Kammok Roo
I’ve had the pleasure of using the Kammok Roo for the last couple weeks. Kyle and I have set up the Roo in all types of city environments to chill, drink coffee, and watch the sun rise/set. The point is not only to chill with friends over a beverage of choice, but to show how easily accommodating the Kammok Roo is in all environments.
The Roo comes in this nice little self containing roll top pouch that keeps it protected from the elements. The pouch is secured to the Roo so you will not have to keep up with it when you pull your Kammok out. What most new people to the Kammok experience will do (wink wink) is open the roll top bag and pull the Roo completely out only to have it flapping in the wind, dangling on the ground getting dirty where your head is about to be. This may not be that big of a deal in some environments, but not all environments are made equal (i.e. I would not want my Roo to be hanging out on the ground where used oil has saturated the concrete). How do you avoid this potential issue?
First make sure your Python Strap’s are set up and secure. Then, making sure you have packed your Roo in a manner that the Kanga Claw carabiners are at the top of the pouch (very easy to do), you walk over to one Python Strap, secure the Roo to it, and walk away. Letting the Roo pull itself out of the compression sack until you reach your other Python Strap.
BOOM!! You’re all set up and ready to enjoy your Roo!!
OH! and don’t worry about falling through the Roo, It may feel like taking a leap of faith the first time you get in it, but once you do, you won’t want to get out.
The Roo is “made of Kammok’s proprietary diamond ripstop fabric, LunarWave, the Roo is incredibly lightweight, tear resistant, breathable, and roomy enough for two.” – Kammok
With its 500 lbs. copacity, you’ll be able to fit a small family and the dog comfortably. I hope you’ve enjoyed reading my two cents. Go check out Kammok’s Instagram page for other rad snaps! Kyle and I have had the pleasure of taking over Kammok’s account this week, posting out take on the Roo.
Being that I’ve just recently built up our FOLLY x BRYANT FaTRoB to ride all over the land for bikepacking trips… the Kammok Roo couldn’t have landed in my lap at a more perfect time.
Thanks a ton Kammok!! You guys are nailing it on all levels. Super pumped to see what you come up with next! Cheers!

FOLLY x BRYANT FaTRoB Freedom
Last night I got the FOLLY x BRYANT FaTRoB #getradmachine completed with the help of Blevins Bicycle Co. As soon as it was finished I darted out the door headed for anything off the road. I smashed through a construction site, rode the grass, and had the biggest smile on my face the entire time! I’VE BEEN OFF TWO WHEELS FOR 2 MONTHS!!! It was an explosion of pent up energy transferring through my legs into this snappy cross, road, rando! It was glorious!!
I ride for a few hours, taking snaps as I go, just thinking of how the next morning was going to play out. Do I wake up at the butt crack of dawn and hit up the FOLLYCROSS race routes or do I wait till the sun sets and enjoy that… WHY NOT BOTH?! I get up at 5 a.m., make coffee, eat a small breakfast, and head out to the Wheeler Wildlife Refuge where FOLLYCROSS 2014 will be held.
The humidity here in Alabama is through the roof and this morning was no exemption. It’s my first legit ride back. I take my Yashica FX-3 Super along for the journey to photo document smashing gravel on this beautiful black beauty. The fog was everywhere, peacful and quite, I take a few shots before I get out to Wheeler. As I’m peddling through the woods I see streaking light that would be a solid shot! What I didn’t focus on was that every shot doesn’t necessarily needed f/1:2. I was too excited to pay attention to what my aperture was set at and that’s ok. Things got a little tight. Lessons learned for next go around… PLUS my lens and view finder were fogged most of the time. This fall I’ll have a lot more experience and it won’t be magma hot/humid.
The photos below were taken this morning, processed locally, and now up for your viewing pleasure. It shows the pre, during, and post ride.
Did you know that the FOLLY x BRYANT FaTRoB is available for pre-order? Check this out for more details.
The FOLLY x BRYANT FatRob
We are very proud to release the FOLLY x BRYANT edition FatRob for your preorder pleasure.
There are three different models for you to choose from, FatRob Steve, FatRob Dixie, and L’iL FatRob. They range from a 700c, 650b, and 26″ wheel base to fit the kind of riding your going to do on this #GETRADMACHINE! I personally went with the FatRob Steve and am in the process of hooking up my 700c thrashing machine! So many great memories will be made on this one of kind hand-made/American made bicicleta! That… and Co-Founder/best bud Kyle Steed designed the logo…. NAILING IT!!
“You remember that feeling you had as a kid when you swung a leg over your bike and blasted off towards your friend’s house linking cul-de-sacs and unfenced yards and dirt trails to get there? Or how you felt that first day you rode 10, 20, 50 or 100 miles? I wanted to design a road bike that reunited me with those feelings of freedom and exploration starting from the ground up. I came to the drawing board (literally) with no preconceived notions on what this type of bike should look like, but I thought about how I want the bike to respond to the riding that I grew up doing and find myself gravitating towards again. Kind of like if you took a CX bike, Randonneur, and go-fast Road bike and ran them over with a steam roller. Take that hunk of iron and produce one bike that could do it all. An adventure bike without equal. A Fat Tired Road Bike, or FaTRoB as I like to call it. All the necessary features and nothing you don’t. A feeling of youth you could grab in bike form for just $1950 frame and fork.” – Joshua Bryant (Cycles J Bryant)
Definitely make sure to head over to Cycles J Bryant and check out the back story on each FatRob model. If the stories don’t make you laugh just a little then this frame/fork combo might not be what you’re looking for. When we labeled it as a #GETRADMACHINE we meant just that! Ride everywhere with the serious and light hearted alike in the terrain of their choosing, if need be, but never neglecting that dark and mysterious dirt road no one else is willing to conquer!
Go check out more info at our shop. The preorder is limited to 15 frame and forks and will last until the end of August with a delivery date of late Fall. Feel free to email ( createfolly@gmail.com ) with any questions you may have. Thank you for your support!
Kyle Steed Creates for His City
Dallas City Mural Created by Kyle Steed from Doug Klembara on Vimeo.
When I visit Kyle in Texas we always joke about how everything is “Texas Sized”… “that’s a Texas sized burger/truck/traffic/beer…” and the list goes on. In order to keep Texas “Texas Sized” he had no other choice than to paint this BIG ASS Texas Sized mural for the city of Dallas.
Here’s some info about it/him:
“Kyle Steed, a local dallas multi-disciplinary artis, has just completed his biggest work to date. Along wthe new Trinity Strand Mural, set back off Manufacturing and Farrington, stands the 16 ft. tall by 92 ft. (Editors Note: TEXAS SIZED) long mural. The mural is a play on words of the famous quote by John F. Kennedy, “Ask not what your CITY can do for you, but what you can do for your CITY.”
The Dallas CITY Mural explores the line we walk between individual consumers and community creators. It’s about building something bigger than ourselves.
Like the Trinity Strand Trail, this new mural seeks to help bring new life to the Design District and the city of Dallas at large. The large hand-drawn letters are a stark contrast to the cold commercial buildings and affluent boutiques that line the streets. But that’s the focus in all of Kyle’s work; to embrace the imperfections and bring a bit of whimsy to all his hand touches.
Artist Kyle Steed, “I was humbled at the opportunity to make a statement to my city on such a large scale. It needed to be relevant not only to Texas, but Dallas in particular. So whenever I sat down to sketch out some concepts, I played with the quote by JFK and changed ‘country’ to ‘city’ – it fit perfectly. My hope is that it will inspire people to think about ways they can do something to help make Dallas a better place to live, not just a simple consumer.”
Yup… radness acquired. If you are super amped on this and would like to get in touch with good ol’ SteedZ… feel free to contact him with questions (aka interview purposes) or to ask about working in your city.

The Throwback // Skateboarding in 2000
I love that Kyle has kept up with fun photos like this. It brings back so many good memories when we would skate every day/all day. Apparently I knew the rule of thirds before I knew the rule of thirds.
Kyle just had an interview post up over at WELD by WELD. You should go check it out to get a little glimpse into that crazy dudes world.
